Pilates vs Strength Training: Why Both Matter

Pilates and strength training each offer unique benefits that support the body in different ways.

Pilates

Pilates focuses on control, awareness, alignment, and quality of movement. It helps address both tightness and weaknesses in the body by building strength and control - not just stretching muscles.

One of the biggest benefits of Pilates is improved body awareness. Many people unknowingly move with compensations - overusing certain muscles while underusing others. Pilates helps identify these patterns and teaches the body how to move more efficiently.

Pilates helps:

  • Reduce tightness and stiffness in the body
  • Improve stability, balance, and coordination
  • Build better awareness of posture
  • Improve muscle activation and uncover compensations
  • Support injury prevention and rehabilitation

It also helps translate movement into everyday function - things like bending, twisting, reaching, walking, climbing stairs, or getting up off the floor with more control and ease.

Strength training

Strength training progressively challenges muscles, bones, and connective tissue, helping the body become more resilient over time. This is especially important as we age, as maintaining strength plays a huge role in long-term health and independence.

Strength training helps:

  • Build muscle and bone density
  • Support joints and tendons
  • Build strength for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
  • Help make everyday tasks easier

Why Combining Both Works Best

Pilates and strength training work best when used together.

Pilates helps you move well.
Strength training helps you become stronger within those movements.

Together, these types of movement create a strong foundation for long-term health, and improve our tolerance to functional movements we perform every day, things like:

  • Carrying groceries
  • Picking objects up off the floor
  • Reaching overhead into cupboards
  • Getting up from chairs or the floor
  • Lifting children or heavy bags
  • Completing household tasks like unpacking the dishwasher
